Liza with a Z

liza_minnelli.jpgOK, early "dark thirty" and landing in the freezing 30-degree temp, (hey, I'm from California) and struggle with my dead body weight luggage over to the shocked limo driver's car. Since he hails from Jersey (Soprano country, no?), he does indeed believe I am smuggling a body into my hotel room. Or several.

I stayed awake to slink into my red (well, fuschia) dress for the Hearts Truth red dress collection. I scurried on over to the tents and landed front row between Avril from Bazaar, and Mary Alice Stephenson. We chit chat and the show begins. Quick disclaimer, I don't like red dresses, especially gowns. Don't know why--I'm weird that way.

Anyway, that's not what this fab show is about. This show raises awareness for heart health for women, and First Lady Laura Bush does a singular job opening the show. Lovely celebs dance down the runway--the best being Rita Moreno, so genuine in her bright red "My fair lady" dress by Lily Samii. Camryn rocked it, Ashanti wore the loveliest dress by Tracy Reese, Joss Stone was completely adorable, and then Heidi Klum in Marc Jacobs reminded me that I am 5' 5" and not a supermodel.

Then, Liza. I was transported into an altered state. Here is Liza Minnelli singing "New York, New York" to me, when five minutes ago I was on a plane from LA. I quickly realize it is too late to up my meds, so I sit back and enjoy the show, as surreal as it is. Liza is amazing, and captures everyone's heart, which is very fitting for this show.

As we head out, the hardened, cool fashion brigade is reminded "You gotta have heart," which is pumping through the speakers. I will take that under advisement! Dash over to Duckie Brown to see some mens gear. (I have to dress my husband better.) I swear, he has been wearing the same T-shirt since I met him!

Slamming music greets us as we take our seats, and then stops for dead as the show begins. Interestingly enough, this duo of designers wanted us to have a respite from the election and the war, and all that media noise. They gave us a 7-minute show in silence. It meant I could really concentrate on the clothes, and they are pretty edgy. Narrow, '60s-inspired London pants, large pea coats, a gorgeous shearling, smart crombie jackets and a Prince of Wales beaded sweater!? Huh? Afterwards I asked Tyson Beckford if he would wear a full-on beaded sweater. He said he is man enough. And I concur!
